About Campo Olimpico de Golfe (Rio Olympic Golf Course)

The Rio Olympic Golf Course in Barra da Tijuca was built for the golf tournaments of the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first Olympic golf since 1904. Gil Hanse designed the par 71 course, which sits within the Marapendi Natural Reserve and measures 6,525 metres from the men's tees and 5,711 metres from the women's tees. After the Games the course was opened to the public under Rio de Janeiro city ownership, and it now hosts junior tournaments and introductory programmes for new players. History of Campo Olimpico de Golfe (Rio Olympic Golf Course)

The Rio Olympic Golf Course was built for the golf tournaments of the 2016 Summer Olympics, and Gil Hanse designed it. It sits within the Marapendi Natural Reserve in Barra da Tijuca, and building it in a protected natural area prompted controversy over development in an environmental preservation zone. Justin Rose won the men's gold medal for Great Britain with a final score of 268, 16 under par. He and Henrik Stenson were tied at 15 under on the 18th, a par 5 of 522 metres, and Rose made birdie there to win by two strokes after Stenson made bogey. After the Games the course was opened to the public under city ownership.

The par-5 18th, 522 metres (571 yards), is where the men's Olympic gold medal was decided in 2016. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson were level at 15 under when they reached the hole. Rose pitched close and made his short birdie putt, while Stenson ran his birdie attempt past the hole and made bogey, so Rose won by two strokes.
