About São Paulo Golf Club

São Paulo Golf Club is the first golf club founded in Brazil, and it has been part of the city's sporting life for more than a century. The course has 18 holes and covers about 59 hectares of gently rolling parkland in the Santo Amaro district, in the south of São Paulo. The club is private and keeps a calendar of long-running trophy competitions that go back to its earliest years. Over the years it has also staged professional tournaments from Europe, the United States and Latin America.

  • A six-hole practice course on the grounds gives members a dedicated place to practice.
  • The club's first tournament was played in 1903 and won by J. M. Stuart.
  • The São Paulo 500 Years Open was staged here in 2000 as a European Tour event.
  • Web.com Tour events have also been hosted at the club.

History of São Paulo Golf Club

São Paulo Golf Club was founded in 1901 as the São Paulo Country Club by British and Scottish railway workers. The first ground lay at Chácara Dulley. As the city grew the members moved to the Bela Vista district, to a hill known as Morro dos Ingleses, the Englishmen's Hill. Around 1915 they moved again, to land belonging to the Light company in Santo Amaro, where the club has stayed ever since. In 1935 the club hired the architect Stanley Thompson, who worked with José Maria Gonzalez on a renovation that replaced sand greens with grass.
