About Llao Llao Hotel Golf Course Golf Course
The golf course at Llao Llao Hotel and Resort in Bariloche is one of South America's most breathtakingly beautiful golf experiences, set in the Argentine Lake District amid a landscape of glacial lakes, Andean peaks, and dense Patagonian forest that evokes Switzerland or New Zealand rather than anything typically associated with Latin American golf. The Llao Llao Hotel — often compared to Canada's Banff Springs — was built in 1940 in a grand alpine lodge style, and the accompanying golf course routes through native coigüe forest and along the shores of Lake Moreno. From many tees and greens, the snow-capped Andes are visible to the west and the deep blue waters of Nahuel Huapi Lake and Lake Moreno stretch in multiple directions. The course is modest by championship standards but extraordinary by scenic standards — there are few places on earth where the natural backdrop overwhelms the golf to this degree. Llao Llao is the centrepiece of Patagonia's luxury tourism scene and a destination golfers travel specifically to experience this confluence of landscape, architecture, and Andean wilderness.
— History
History of Llao Llao Hotel Golf Course
The Llao Llao Hotel was built in 1940 by the Argentine state railway company as a grand resort in the Patagonian Lake District, modelled on the great alpine lodges of Canada and Switzerland. British architect Alejandro Bustillo designed the hotel in a Norwegian-influenced alpine style that complemented the surrounding Andean landscape, and the accompanying golf course was designed by A.H. Anderson as part of the original resort development. The nine-hole original was later extended to eighteen holes, routing through the coigüe beech forest and along the Lake Moreno shoreline. The resort was privatised and has operated as a luxury hotel since the 1990s, attracting international visitors seeking Patagonian wilderness combined with civilised accommodation.
— Signature Holes
Signature Holes at Llao Llao Hotel Golf Course
The par-3 6th is Llao Llao's most spectacular hole, played from an elevated tee across the lake shore to a green with water on the left and native forest on the right — on clear mornings when the snow-capped Tronador volcano is visible to the south, it is one of the most visually extraordinary golf shots in South America. The par-4 11th plays through the coigüe forest with Nahuel Huapi Lake visible through the trees to the north, demanding a precise drive through a forested corridor before the Andean panorama opens on the approach. The par-5 18th finishes toward the hotel with the full cordillera visible ahead — a closing hole where the architecture of the course gives way entirely to the architecture of the landscape.
