About Circolo Golf Villa d'Este
Circolo Golf Villa d'Este is an 18-hole, par 69 course at Montorfano, in the hills near Como. Peter Gannon laid it out in 1926 through chestnut, birch and pine woods, and the setting is hilly, tree-lined parkland. The club has a wood-paneled bar and terrace that look over the course, and a restaurant, driving range, putting greens and pro shop.
- Villa d'Este hosted twelve editions of the Italian Open between 1928 and 1972.
- The club is the seventh oldest in Italy, founded as the private club of the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este in Cernobbio.
- Giuseppe Bergomi designed the clubhouse, with waxed wooden floors and paneled walls in a British style.
- Buggies and trolleys can be rented, and the practice facilities include a range, two putting greens and a practice bunker.
History of Circolo Golf Villa d'Este
The club was founded in 1926 as the private club of the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, and Peter Gannon designed the course that year. It is the seventh oldest golf club in Italy. The Italian Open was played here twelve times from 1928, and the last of those editions was in 1972. A fire on December 8-9, 1990 destroyed much of the clubhouse. Under president Roberto Tronchetti Provera it was rebuilt within two years.
