About TPC Sawgrass

TPC Sawgrass is a public golf facility in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and its Stadium Course is the one most golfers mean when they use the name. Pete Dye designed it, with his wife Alice, as a par-72 course of 7,245 yards. It has been the home of the Players Championship since 1982. Deane Beman, the PGA Tour commissioner, wanted a permanent venue for that event, and the Tour acquired 415 acres of swampland for one dollar to build it. The course takes public tee times booked through the TPC Sawgrass system. We could not confirm a green-fee range from two sources, so check the booking site for the current rate. Jacksonville International is the nearest major airport.

  • The course was built with spectators in mind, using earth mounds around key viewing areas, the stadium idea behind its name.
  • Alice Dye is credited with the idea of the island green, which grew out of sand dug beside the 17th.
  • Jerry Pate won the first Players on the course in 1982 and celebrated by jumping into the lake by the 18th.
  • A second course, Dye's Valley, opened on the same property in 1987, beside the Stadium Course.

History of TPC Sawgrass

The Stadium Course was the PGA Tour's own project. Beman wanted a permanent home for the Players Championship, and Dye built it on flat, wet ground that needed sand to raise its levels. The best sand lay around what became the 17th, and once it was dug out, water surrounded the green. The first Players held on the course was in 1982.

Signature holes at TPC Sawgrass

The 17th is the hole everyone knows, a par 3 played to a green surrounded by water. It is the image most people associate with the Players and with the course as a whole. The 18th finishes beside a lake, which is where Pate celebrated his 1982 win, so the round ends with water in view once more.

When to play TPC Sawgrass

Because tee times are public, timing is a booking question. The Players Championship is held here each year, so ask before booking whether tournament preparation affects course availability on the dates you want, and check the TPC Sawgrass booking site for current availability.
