About The Golf Club
The Golf Club is a private 18-hole, par 72 course at 4522 Kitzmiller Road in New Albany, Ohio, in the suburban Columbus area. Pete Dye designed it, and writers regularly place it among his early masterworks. It is also an early showing of the railroad-tie bunkers that became his trademark: here the bunkers and ponds are edged with ties. Dye also steered away from the tree-lined parkland style common in central Ohio. The holes have a more open, heathland character, with grasses doing much of the visual work, and ponds and bunkers among the hazards. The club is not open to the public, and play is for members and their guests.
- From the back tees the course stretches beyond 7,400 yards, and it carries a slope rating of 142.
- Membership is men-only, a detail both GOLF magazine and independent reviewers mention when they describe the club.
- Tall native grasses and fescue rough line many holes, adding texture and difficulty away from the fairways.
- The 3rd and 13th holes are the two that reviewers mention first when they describe the layout.
History of The Golf Club
The Golf Club opened in 1967 in suburban Columbus, and the club's own website dates its existence to that year. Construction drew the interest of Jack Nicklaus, who grew up in the area. He acted as an unpaid consultant while Dye worked, which made the course one of his first steps into golf design. That link is why the club turns up in accounts of both men's careers, and it is a large part of the club's story.
Signature holes at The Golf Club
The 3rd and 13th are the holes most often singled out, and both carry the railroad-tie bunkers and water that identify the course. Reviewers treat them as the clearest early statement of Dye's ideas about variety. Elsewhere, the open grasses mean a stray tee shot usually ends up in rough rather than among trees.
When to play The Golf Club
The Golf Club is private, so the best time to visit is whenever a member can host you. Dates are arranged through your host, not a booking page. Ask which months the course is open and whether any member events will affect the day you have in mind.
Playing The Golf Club: tips
A round here means playing as a member's guest, since the club publishes no green fee and sells no public tee times. The club can be reached on 614-855-7326. John Glenn Columbus International Airport is the usual gateway for visitors. Because membership is men-only, ask your host early about the club's guest rules and how they apply to your group.
