About Firestone Country Club
The South Course at Firestone Country Club is a par 70 championship layout in Akron, Ohio. It is the main course at a club that also has the North and Fazio courses, and it has long been one of the most demanding stages in professional golf. Its best-known hole is the par-5 16th, which plays to a green fronted by a pond. The club is a private membership club.
- Three PGA Championships were played on the South Course, in 1960, 1966 and 1975.
- Tiger Woods won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone eight times, more than any other player.
- The club's other two championship courses, the North and the Fazio, share the property, and on-site villas and guest rooms are available.
- The South now hosts the Kaulig Companies Championship, an annual PGA Tour Champions event.
History of Firestone Country Club
Harvey S. Firestone founded the club in 1929 as a retreat for employees of his tire company. Bert Way designed the original South Course, and Robert Trent Jones redesigned it ahead of the 1960 PGA Championship. The PGA Tour held its Akron event on the South Course through 2018, a stretch that included the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational from 1999.
Signature holes at Firestone Country Club
The 16th is the hole most associated with Firestone, a par 5 that plays to a green guarded by a pond in front. Jack Nicklaus made a memorable par there during the 1975 PGA Championship, a moment still tied to the course.
When to play Firestone Country Club
The clearest chance for a non-member to see the South Course is during the club's annual professional event.
