About Scioto Country Club
Scioto Country Club is a private 18-hole, par 70 course in the Upper Arlington area of Columbus, Ohio. Donald Ross designed it, and the club's championship record is a large part of its reputation. Over the decades it has hosted five different championships, running from the U.S. Open to the U.S. Senior Open. It is also the course where Jack Nicklaus learned the game, and that history gives the club a second identity alongside the tournament record. Scioto is not open to the public, and visits depend on an invitation from a member.
- Bobby Jones won the 1926 U.S. Open at Scioto, the earliest of the club's championship events.
- The 1931 Ryder Cup matches were held here, and the PGA Championship followed in 1950.
- Jack Nicklaus learned the game at Scioto under the club's teaching professional, Jack Grout.
- The U.S. Amateur came in 1968, and the U.S. Senior Open has visited in 1986, 2016 and 2026.
History of Scioto Country Club
Scioto was founded in 1916, and Donald Ross laid out the course. It later became a regular host for national championships, from the 1926 Open through the senior events of recent years. In 2008 Jack Nicklaus and Michael Hurdzan carried out a renovation of the course, a fitting project given Nicklaus's boyhood connection to the club. The return of the U.S. Senior Open in 2026 made it the third time that event has been held here.
When to play Scioto Country Club
Scioto is private, so the best time to visit is when a member can host you. Ask about the months the course is open, and whether a championship or member event will affect the day you have in mind.
