About Peachtree Golf Club
Peachtree Golf Club is a private 18-hole, par 72 parkland course in Atlanta, Georgia. Bobby Jones founded it, and Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course together with him, as a deliberate attempt to echo what Jones had done at Augusta National. Comparisons with that course have followed Peachtree ever since. It opened in the late 1940s, and its biggest stage came in 1989, when it hosted the Walker Cup. Membership is required to play, which means there is no public tee sheet and no published green fee, and access comes through a member who can bring you as a guest.
- Great Britain and Ireland won the 1989 Walker Cup here by 12½ to 11½, their first victory on American soil.
- Jim Milligan's half against Jay Sigel clinched the 1989 match after he came back from two down with three holes to play.
- The greens are large, fast bentgrass surfaces that define the course's character.
- Water comes into play on many holes, with a creek running through much of the course.
History of Peachtree Golf Club
Peachtree exists because Bobby Jones wanted it to. Jones, who had also founded Augusta National, set out to found a club of his own and partnered with Robert Trent Jones Sr. to lay out the course. The aim was to build something as close to Augusta as possible. The club opened in the late 1940s. More than forty years later, it hosted the Walker Cup, and the match went down as a famous one for the visiting side.
Signature holes at Peachtree Golf Club
The 2nd is a long par 5 that brings the creek into play early in the round. That sets the pattern for the course, where water stays in view on other holes and the large greens ask for well-judged approaches. With so much of the test in the water and the putting surfaces, placement matters more than power.
When to play Peachtree Golf Club
Peachtree is private, so timing depends on a member's invitation. The club publishes no visitor calendar, so ask your host which months the course is open and whether any events are planned for the date you have in mind.
Playing Peachtree Golf Club: tips
There is no public access and no published green fee. A round at Peachtree means playing as a member's guest. The club is in Atlanta, and it publishes little visitor guidance, so confirm arrival time, dress code and caddie or cart arrangements with your host in advance.
