About Canterbury Golf Club

Canterbury Golf Club is a private 18-hole, par 70 course in Beachwood, a suburb east of Cleveland, Ohio. Herbert Strong designed it, and it was reconstructed and enlarged in 1928. The club has hosted thirteen major tournaments and championships since 1932, and it is one of only two clubs to have staged all five of the men's rotating major championships: the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship. Canterbury is counted among the top 100 courses in the United States, and its closing holes have a name for being among the hardest stretches in Ohio golf.

  • The Western Open came to Canterbury in 1932 and 1937, years before the club's first U.S. Open.
  • Lawson Little beat Gene Sarazen 70 to 73 in an 18-hole playoff at the 1940 U.S. Open after both finished on 287.
  • Jack Nicklaus won the 1973 PGA Championship here, passing Bobby Jones's record for major titles.
  • The U.S. Senior Open arrived in 1996, with Dave Stockton winning, and the Senior PGA Championship followed in 2009.

History of Canterbury Golf Club

A group from Cleveland's University Club founded Canterbury in 1921, and the course opened on July 1, 1922. Strong's original routing was enlarged and reconstructed in 1928, when the clubhouse was expanded too. The U.S. Amateur was played here in 1964, won by William Campbell, and again in 1979, when Mark O'Meara took the title.

Signature holes at Canterbury Golf Club

The finish is Canterbury's best-known stretch. The closing holes are widely described as demanding, and they test players at the end of every round.

When to play Canterbury Golf Club

As a private club, Canterbury sets its own calendar, and public attention is highest when it hosts a championship. The USGA has awarded it the 2027 U.S. Girls' Junior, and championship weeks are the best chance to see the course for anyone without a member host.

Playing Canterbury Golf Club: tips
