About Fox Chapel Golf Club

Fox Chapel Golf Club is a private 18-hole course in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, designed by Seth Raynor and Charles Banks in the tradition of Charles Blair Macdonald, Raynor's mentor. The club calls itself a traditional non-equity golf and country club. A restoration led by Tom Marzolf returned the course to its 1925 layout, undoing changes made in the 1930s on the basis of A.W. Tillinghast's recommendations. The routing carries several Macdonald-style template holes.

  • The 2002 Curtis Cup, a women's amateur match between the United States and Great Britain and Ireland, was played here.
  • The template list includes the Punchbowl, Eden, Cape, Redan, Alps and Biarritz, all copied in the Macdonald tradition.
  • The restored greens draw praise and are a large part of why the course plays well today.
  • Macdonald built courses around copies of the best-known holes of Europe, and Fox Chapel carries several.

History of Fox Chapel Golf Club

Fox Chapel Golf Club was established in 1923, and its Raynor and Banks course opened in 1925.

Signature holes at Fox Chapel Golf Club

The ninth is the hole most often singled out, since the restoration brought the Lion's Mouth bunker back to the front edge of its green and gave the approach its original look.

When to play Fox Chapel Golf Club

Because Fox Chapel is private, the practical answer is whenever a member invites you. Pittsburgh winters are cold, so most golf is played from spring through fall. Ask your host about current course conditions, since the restored bunkers and greens are maintained to the historic design.

Playing Fox Chapel Golf Club: tips

There is no public booking at Fox Chapel, so a round means playing as the guest of a member. The club sells no visitor tee times and publishes no green fee. Walk the restored holes with your host before the round.
