About Country Club of Fairfield
Country Club of Fairfield is a private 18-hole, par 70 course in Fairfield, Connecticut, beside Long Island Sound. Seth Raynor laid it out in the links style, with versions of celebrated British Isles holes, and it was among his earliest projects. Water still shapes play: a lagoon runs through the property and comes into the game on several holes.
- A.W. Tillinghast altered the layout after Raynor, reworking the green complexes.
- Robert Trent Jones Sr. also made later changes, so the course carries work by several architects.
- Bruce Hepner removed overgrown trees to reopen views and bring back a links-style feel.
- The routing gives views across Long Island Sound from many of the tees.
History of Country Club of Fairfield
The club was founded in 1914 by Oliver Gould Jennings and others. The land they chose was little more than onion fields and tidal marsh. Seth Raynor was engaged to design the course, and construction was slow because so much landfill was needed before golf could be played. Much later, Renaissance Golf Design, Tom Doak's firm, and Bruce Hepner led a restoration that brought back Raynor's greens and bunker style.
When to play Country Club of Fairfield
Because the club is private, the practical answer is whenever a member invites you, so ask your host which dates suit the club. The course sits right beside Long Island Sound, where conditions can change quickly, so check the forecast before you travel.
