About Victoria National Golf Club
Victoria National Golf Club is a private 18-hole, par 72 course at Newburgh, in the southwest corner of Indiana, designed by Tom Fazio. The course was carved from an abandoned coal strip mine, and Fazio worked along the corridors left between the spoil mounds. That gives the round a tight, isolated feel, with most holes sitting in their own pocket of the property. Position off the tee matters more than raw distance, and the forced carries over lakes and creek arms are where scorecards fall apart.
- Water comes into play on most holes, from the long finger lakes that formed when the mining machinery reached groundwater.
- The course covers more than 400 acres of former strip-mine land.
- Tees begin at 5,010 yards, so players of different ability can take on the same routing.
- Bentgrass covers the playing surfaces, a cool-season turf that does best in moderate temperatures.
History of Victoria National Golf Club
Fazio found far more possible golf holes on the property than he could use, so the job became narrowing the routing to the best eighteen. The club has since moved from a regional private course to a stop on the professional schedule, with a Korn Ferry Tour event first played as the Web.com Tour stop in 2012.
Signature holes at Victoria National Golf Club
The 16th, a par 3, plays downhill to a green almost surrounded by water and trouble, and is widely treated as the signature. The 5th is a par 3 that crosses fingers of the lake to a narrow peninsula green. The 15th is a par 5 that asks for an accurate tee shot through trees and then a decision over a pond on the approach, making it a genuine risk-and-reward hole.
When to play Victoria National Golf Club
Victoria National is private, so the best time is whenever a member invites you. Southern Indiana has hot, humid summers and cold winters, so spring and early autumn are the most comfortable for a round. Check the professional tour schedule against your dates before you plan a trip around an invitation.
Playing Victoria National Golf Club: tips
Play is by member invitation only, and there is no public tee-time booking or published green fee. Ask your host how the round will be arranged and which tees to use. Bring spare balls, because the lake carries are unforgiving.
