About Secession Golf Club
Secession Golf Club is a private 18-hole course at Beaufort, in South Carolina's Lowcountry. Bruce Devlin completed the design after Pete Dye and his son P.B. Dye had done the early routing. It is a links-style layout built in the wetlands, with Scottish-style bunkering, and fourteen of its holes run along the tidal marshes. The setting is open and exposed, with wide marsh views and no houses on the property.
- The club has no real estate development attached, so no houses line the course.
- Clubhouse rooms and cottages on the property let members and their guests stay on site.
- The ground is mostly flat, and each green sits close to the next tee.
- About 750 members belong to the club, and membership is by invitation only.
History of Secession Golf Club
Secession dates to the early 1990s, when the club was planned on marshland near Beaufort as a walking-only, caddie-driven course with no real estate around it. Bruce Devlin, who finished the design, is an Australian former PGA Tour player.
Signature holes at Secession Golf Club
The 14th is the hole reviewers single out most often, with a green set against the swamp. The opening hole sets the tone with a carry across the marsh. The finish is the other highlight: the 17th is an island-green par 3, and the 18th is a par 4 that plays back to the clubhouse with a carry over the marsh to reach the green.
When to play Secession Golf Club
Secession is private, so the date depends on a member's invitation rather than the season. The course is open and wind-swept, and winds and tides shift from day to day, so conditions can change from one round to the next. Expect to adjust club selection more than the calendar.
