About Kiawah Island Club — Cassique

Kiawah Island Club's Cassique course is an 18-hole, par 72 layout on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, set among rolling fields and Lowcountry marsh. Tom Watson designed it, and it was his first solo design in the United States. He drew on the links courses of Scotland and Ireland. The front nine plays across open ground, while the back nine moves among trees and marshland. Many holes can be played in more than one way, so imagination and shot-making count for more than raw length.

  • Spectacle bunkers recall those at Carnoustie, and other features on the course nod to Turnberry.
  • The clubhouse follows a 19th-century English country manor design and looks over the course and the Kiawah River tidelands.
  • A caddie program is part of the service, and a Golf Learning Center provides instruction and club fitting.
  • The name honors a Kiawah Indian chief who settled by the river's mouth at the Atlantic.

History of Kiawah Island Club — Cassique

Cassique opened in 2000 on land that had been flat tomato fields, with no natural movement for a links designer to work with. Dirt was brought in to build the large mounds and undulations that frame the fairways and give the property its rumpled, dune-like look. Watson wanted holes that reward touch and creativity, and he laid the course out so that several of them offer more than one way in. The course shares Kiawah Island Club with the River Course.

Signature holes at Kiawah Island Club — Cassique

Holes 4 to 6 are the course's most unusual stretch, because they can be played in alternate loops, known as Nip-N-Tuck and Pulpit, so the middle of the round changes with the day's setup. The par-5 15th plays out into the marsh, the clearest reminder that this is a Lowcountry course that borrows from the British Isles.

When to play Kiawah Island Club — Cassique

Wind is the main variable at Cassique. The open front nine gives little shelter, so a calm morning and a breezy afternoon make for quite different rounds. Because the invitation comes from a member, your date will usually be set by your host rather than the season, so ask which routing is in play.

Cassique is the private course at Kiawah Island Club, and play is by member invitation; there is no published green fee. Arrange a caddie through your host if you want local knowledge on the rotating holes. Confirm tees, dress and the day's routing with your host before you arrive.
