About Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro

Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid is built around the Arriba, or Upper, course, a par 72 laid out by Harry Colt and later shaped by Tom Simpson. The Abajo, or Lower, course shares the grounds and was remodeled by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The setting is parkland, on Avenida de Miraflores, and a nine-hole short course by Kyle Phillips sits alongside the two full layouts.

  • The club hosted the Madrid Open.
  • The Spanish Open was played here too, and Puerta de Hierro was its main Madrid venue in the championship's early decades.
  • Frank Pont's Infinite Variety Golf Design has been restoring the Arriba, bringing back Colt's bunkering and strategic options that had been lost.
  • On the 10th hole the restoration reversed the bunker layout around the green and replaced ornate mounds with short-mown run-offs.

History of Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro

The club was founded in 1895 as the Madrid Polo Club by a group of aristocrats, with the backing of King Alfonso XIII, who provided the land. Golf arrived later, when Harry Colt laid out the first 18 holes, which were ready in 1914 and became the Arriba. Tom Simpson reworked parts of the layout over the years. The Abajo and the nine-hole course were added later, giving the club three layouts.
