About Payne's Valley Golf Course
Payne's Valley Golf Course is the Tiger Woods-designed course at Big Cedar Lodge, in Hollister, Missouri. It has 18 regulation holes at par 72, plus a bonus par 3 as a 19th. The setting is the Ozark hills, with rock outcroppings, ridges, valleys and streams, and Woods's team kept tree removal to a minimum and built a few creeks rather than reshaping the land. The design favors width: fairways are broad, greens are large, and a rough cut low so that a poor shot is still playable. It is built for golfers of all abilities, with enough tee options to make it either a friendly round or a genuine challenge.
- Payne's Valley is the first public-access course from Woods's TGR Design.
- Johnny Morris, Big Cedar Lodge's owner and the founder of Bass Pro Shops, designed the 19th hole himself.
- Several sets of tees let the same course be set up as either an enjoyable round or a stern test.
- Ozarks National is another Big Cedar Lodge course, so a trip to the property can include more than one round.
History of Payne's Valley Golf Course
The course launched with a televised charity exhibition on September 22, 2020, in which Woods and Justin Thomas played Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose. The project was built as a tribute to Payne Stewart, the late Ozarks native and World Golf Hall of Fame member.
Signature holes at Payne's Valley Golf Course
The bonus 19th is the hole people talk about. It is a par 3 with an island green at the foot of a limestone rock wall, with a waterfall running down the center of the face. Players can treat it as an optional closest-to-the-pin challenge after the round rather than part of the scorecard.
