About The Metropolitan Golf Club

The Metropolitan Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 course in Oakleigh South, in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. It is one of the Melbourne Sandbelt courses, a group of championship layouts on the city's sandy ground. Several sets of tees give players a choice of length, and native Australian trees and shrubs frame the holes.

  • The 2018 World Cup of Golf and the 2001 WGC Match Play Championship were both played here.
  • Australian Golf Digest ranks the course 13th nationally, and Golf Australia Magazine places it in its top 20.
  • Beyond the Australian Open, the course has hosted the Australian Masters in 2014 and the Women's Australian Open in 2009.
  • Fairways are pure couch grass and greens are bentgrass.

History of The Metropolitan Golf Club

The club grew out of Royal Melbourne members who chose to stay when that club moved. J.B. MacKenzie laid out the first course, which opened in 1908. Alister MacKenzie advised on bunkering in 1926. Holes were lost to a school, and Dick Wilson designed replacement holes. Crafter and Mogford were appointed as the club's course architects in the 2010s.
