About Commonwealth Golf Club
Commonwealth Golf Club is an 18-hole course on Glennie Avenue in Oakleigh South, a south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, on the Melbourne Sandbelt. The strategic routing runs between tree-lined fairways, and the club is known for its tournament record. A restoration finished in 2024 rebuilt all 18 green complexes and replanted the greens with Pure Distinction bentgrass, and tree removal opened up sightlines across the property.
- The Australian Amateur returned in 2025, the first time the club had hosted it since 2013.
- Green surrounds are Santa Ana couch, and the greens are bentgrass.
- A vegetation plan led by Paul Mogford removed non-native trees.
- The course appears in top 100 lists.
History of Commonwealth Golf Club
The roots of Commonwealth go back to 1914, when predecessor clubs played in the area. The club was constituted as Commonwealth in 1920 on 89 acres of land in Oakleigh South. Charles Lane studied golf architecture overseas in the 1920s, including the work of Harry Colt. Sloan Morpeth redesigned all 18 greens and introduced a new bunkering system and new teeing grounds. Renaissance Golf Design began a restoration in 2021.
