About Liberty National Golf Club

Liberty National Golf Club is a private 18-hole course in Jersey City, New Jersey, set on the Hudson River waterfront. Tom Kite and Bob Cupp designed it, and it opened in 2006 as a project of Paul Fireman, the former Reebok chief. From the course you look across to the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, a setting that has made it a regular choice for televised team and tour events. The membership is non-equity and selective.

  • The United States beat the International team 19-11 at the 2017 Presidents Cup, played here.
  • Heath Slocum won the 2009 Barclays here, ahead of Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Steve Stricker.
  • Tony Finau won the 2021 Northern Trust in a Monday playoff against Cameron Smith, after Hurricane Henri delayed the final round.
  • Rose Zhang won the 2023 Mizuho Americas Open here in a playoff, in her first start as an LPGA professional.

History of Liberty National Golf Club

The site was an oil refinery with wartime military uses before the club, and part of it was landfill. Paul Fireman turned it into a golf course, and Liberty National opened on July 4, 2006. The PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoff stop came as the Barclays in 2009 and 2013, then as the Northern Trust in 2019 and 2021. Adam Scott won in 2013 and Patrick Reed in 2019, with Abraham Ancer second. Fireman later pursued a plan to extend the club onto the neighbouring Caven Point section of Liberty State Park, but halted it.
