About Bayonne Golf Club
Bayonne Golf Club is an 18-hole, links-style course on the Hudson River waterfront in Bayonne, New Jersey, about five miles from Lower Manhattan. Its design takes cues from the great links of Scotland and Ireland, and the course opened in 2006. Golfers see the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline and the industrial harbor from holes that rise and fall over large man-made dunes, with plenty of elevation change along the water. Golf carts are not used, so every round is on foot.
- Sports Illustrated called Bayonne "the most audacious golf course in the world".
- The clubhouse is a lighthouse-inspired building with wide views over the harbor.
- Members and guests can arrive by a private ferry that runs around the Statue of Liberty.
- Eric Bergstol, a real estate developer, founded the club and designed the course himself.
History of Bayonne Golf Club
The land was an abandoned waterfront landfill. From the late 1990s it received millions of cubic yards of material dredged from the harbor, and that fill was shaped into the dunes and rolling ground players see today. Construction took several years before the course opened in 2006.
Signature holes at Bayonne Golf Club
Bayonne is a course of shaped ground more than single set pieces. Fairways roll through hills and hollows, and the dune ridges create real changes in elevation, so a drive can finish on a slope that changes the next shot. Wind is a constant factor and decides how hard each hole plays.
When to play Bayonne Golf Club
Bayonne is private, so your round depends on a member's invitation. The course sits in an open harbor setting, and links-style turf plays firmest in dry weather, so late spring and early autumn are the safest picks. Winter rounds will be cold and gusty.
