About Hollywood Golf Club
Hollywood Golf Club is a private 18-hole course in Deal, New Jersey, and a showcase for the design ideas of Walter Travis. The course is defined by its man-made features: intricate green complexes and deep, pit-like bunkers set on modest, gently undulating ground. Hazards are meant to pose a real test rather than act as decoration, and the clubhouse sits in a relaxed country-house style.
- Hollywood hosted the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1921, long before the modern restoration revived the course.
- The U.S. Women's Senior Amateur was played here in September 2014, following a bunker restoration finished earlier that year.
- Brian Schneider of Renaissance Golf Design has led the restoration of Travis's bunkers and greens, with work beginning in 2013.
- A tunnel runs through a berm between the 17th green and the 18th tee, and it has been restored.
History of Hollywood Golf Club
Isaac Mackie laid out the original course in 1913, and Walter Travis then reworked it so completely that his name is the one attached to the design. Hollywood was praised in the 1920s as one of the best courses in the country. Later hands left their mark, with Dick Wilson working on the course in 1956 and Rees Jones in 1998, changes that moved it away from Travis's original bunkering and greens.
Signature holes at Hollywood Golf Club
The 12th is a par 4 nicknamed Heinz 57, a reference to the roughly 57 bunkers it once held. The par-3 17th was rebuilt and is ringed by eleven bunkers, and it now plays over 200 yards.
