About Durban Country Club
Durban Country Club is an 18-hole par 72 on the Indian Ocean coast of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal. About half of the holes run through sand dunes that lie parallel to the sea, with tropical vegetation along the way, and the remaining holes cross flatter ground inland. Fairways are heavily contoured, particularly on the dune holes, and the club also keeps tennis and squash courts on its grounds.
- A restaurant and bars on the premises make it easy to stay on after the round.
- The 8th and 17th holes are noted for their undulation.
- The par-3 12th plays along a ridge to a sloped green and is among the hardest short holes.
- Tennis and squash courts share the grounds, so a visit can fill a full day.
History of Durban Country Club
Laurie Waters and George Waterman laid out the course, which opened in 1922. The club came about after problems with the original Durban golf course during a South African Open. The national championship has returned to Durban Country Club many times since.
Signature holes at Durban Country Club
The 3rd is a par 5 of 468 meters, rated among the best third holes. Players tee off from the course's highest point over a valley toward the Indian Ocean. The 18th is a short par 4 with a heavily contoured fairway, which tempts long hitters to try for the green.
