About Ebotse Golf and Country Club

Ebotse Golf and Country Club is one of the premier golf and residential estates on the East Rand of Johannesburg, set around the Blesbokspruit Wetlands — a designated Ramsar wetland of international significance. The course was designed by Phil Jacobs and opened in 2004, routing through the wetlands, over dams, and alongside natural reed beds that provide habitat for a remarkable variety of bird life. On a morning round, the combination of the wetland environment, the bird sounds, and the distant Highveld skyline creates a distinctly South African atmosphere rare in an urban golf setting. The 9th and 18th holes both have dramatic water finishes over the main dam, providing excellent visual drama and genuine strategic pressure at the crucial scoring moments. Ebotse's residential estate element means the course is immaculately conditioned throughout the year, and the resort facilities — including a spa and conference centre — make it a complete corporate and leisure destination east of Johannesburg.

  • Built around the Blesbokspruit Ramsar Wetland — extraordinary birdlife on and around the course
  • Water features prominently on multiple holes with dramatic dam crossings on the 9th and 18th
  • East Rand Johannesburg location — easily accessible from OR Tambo International Airport
  • Immaculate year-round conditioning as part of a premium residential golf estate
  • One of Johannesburg's most respected golf and leisure destinations for corporate and leisure golf
History

Ebotse Golf and Country Club was developed in the early 2000s on the East Rand of Johannesburg, with architect Phil Jacobs tasked with creating a course that would work with rather than against the Blesbokspruit Wetland — a designated Ramsar wetland of international ecological significance. The brief was unusual: design a championship-quality course while preserving and enhancing the wetland habitat that makes the site ecologically valuable. Jacobs's solution, opened in 2004, routed the course through the wetland margins, using the natural dams and reed beds as both hazards and visual features while maintaining environmental buffers around the most sensitive areas.

Signature Holes

The par-4 9th plays to a green set dramatically over the main dam, demanding a mid-to-long iron approach across open water to a well-bunkered putting surface — the halfway point of the round coincides with its most dramatic risk-reward moment. The par-4 18th mirrors this structure, finishing the round with an approach that again requires a carry over the dam, creating bookend water drama on the most memorable scoring holes. The par-3 14th plays across a reed-fringed inlet with the wetland bird life visible throughout the shot, offering a quieter but visually distinctive hole in the middle of the back nine.

Best Time to Visit

May through August is the dry Highveld winter — cool, sunny days with temperatures of 15–22°C and minimal rain, producing firm, fast playing conditions. September through April is the wet season with afternoon thunderstorms common on the Johannesburg plateau, though morning rounds are reliable. The wetland bird life is most active in the early morning throughout the year — an early tee time enhances both the golf and the wildlife experience.
