Best Golf Courses in New York
14 ranked courses in New York
New York has 14 courses in this guide, and 13 of them are private. The exception is the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, an A.W. Tillinghast and Joseph H. Burbeck design from 1936 that anyone can play, including out-of-state visitors. Booking is tiered, with New York residents reserving further ahead than non-residents; play is walking only, and the season runs roughly April 15 to November 15, closed Mondays except holidays. Shinnecock Hills in Southampton ranks highest in the state: William Flynn's 1931 redesign of an 1891 layout by Willie Davis. National Golf Links of America, Charles B. Macdonald's 1911 course, is also in Southampton and has hosted the Walker Cup. Fishers Island Club, a Seth Raynor design completed by Charles Banks, and Friar's Head in Riverhead, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw's 2003 course, are both coastal. Among the parkland courses, Winged Foot West in Mamaroneck is Tillinghast's 1923 design, renovated by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner in 2018, and Oak Hill in Pittsford has hosted the US Open, the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

About Golf Courses in New York
Southampton alone holds three of the fourteen: Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links and Sebonack, with Maidstone in East Hampton and Friar's Head in Riverhead as the other eastern stops. Farmingdale (Bethpage Black), Garden City and Locust Valley (Piping Rock) make a second group. Mamaroneck, Rye, Scarsdale and Sleepy Hollow form a third, while Fishers Island and Pittsford each need their own trip.
