About Cherry Hills Country Club
Cherry Hills Country Club is an 18-hole, par 72 course in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, south of Denver, designed by William Flynn. A restoration led by Tom Doak and Eric Iverson of Renaissance Golf took about a decade and finished in spring 2022. Most of the greens were returned to Flynn's original designs, a major tree management program opened up the playing lines, and Little Dry Creek was put back on its original orientation.
- Arnold Palmer began the 1960 U.S. Open final round seven shots back, drove the 346-yard first green and shot 65.
- The par-5 17th has an island green, the first built on a par 5 in the United States, plus restored cross bunkering.
- Birdie Kim won the 2005 U.S. Women's Open by holing out from a greenside bunker on the 72nd hole.
- Billy Horschel won the 2014 BMW Championship here, finishing 14 under par.
History of Cherry Hills Country Club
The club was founded in 1922 as The Cherry Hills Club, named for a cherry orchard on the grounds, and William Flynn designed the course. It hosted its first U.S. Open in 1938 and the PGA Championship in 1941. The U.S. Open returned in 1960 and 1978, and the PGA Championship came back in 1985. Phil Mickelson won the 1990 U.S. Amateur here, and Jack Nicklaus won the 1993 U.S. Senior Open. The 2023 U.S. Amateur added to a record that the club counts as 14 national championships.
Signature holes at Cherry Hills Country Club
Holes 14, 15 and 16 are where Little Dry Creek matters most, since the restoration returned it to its original orientation closer to the greens. The greens at the 3rd and 13th were completely restored. Bunker work reached eight holes: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 14th and 16th.
