About CapRock Ranch
CapRock Ranch is a private 18-hole, par 71 course near Valentine, in the Sandhills of northwest Nebraska. Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner designed it, and it opened in 2021. The site is unusual even by Sandhills standards. Rolling dunes fall away to a rim of caprock cliffs above the Snake River canyon. Eight greens sit along or beside the canyon, so the round alternates between dune and prairie golf and holes played out to the canyon edge. The routing runs out to the caprock rim and back to the dunes on purpose, so the valley stays part of the round from start to finish. Several of the par 3s play along the canyon and ask for a forced carry over it. The 6th green looks down on the river from roughly 190 feet up, with exposed caprock behind it. The 18th, also a par 3, closes the round with a long carry across a gorge. The club is private, and lodging is part of the property, so members and their guests can stay on site. There is no public tee sheet and no published green fee.

History of CapRock Ranch
CapRock Ranch opened in 2021 and was designed by Gil Hanse together with Jim Wagner. It is a young course in the Nebraska Sandhills, near Valentine. The design took its shape from two features of the property: the dunes that roll across the top of the site and the Snake River canyon, framed by a rim of caprock cliffs. Rather than push the course through the dunes alone, the architects routed the holes out to the caprock rim and back again, so that the river valley became part of the round. Eight greens ended up along or beside the canyon, and two par 3s, the 6th and the 18th, show that drop most clearly. It remains a private club, with lodging on the grounds and no public tee sheet.
Signature holes at CapRock Ranch
The canyon holes carry most of the reputation. The 6th is a par 3 whose green overlooks the Snake River from about 190 feet above, with exposed caprock behind it. At the other end of the round, the 18th is also a par 3, and it demands a long carry over a gorge to reach the green. Between those two, the routing moves out of the dunes and back to the rim more than once, so a player rarely goes more than a few holes without seeing the valley. Eight greens in all sit along or next to the canyon, and several of the par 3s ask for a carry over it.
When to play CapRock Ranch
CapRock Ranch is private, so the best time is simply when a member invites you. The club does not publish an operating season, so ask your host which months the course is open before you plan a trip. Nebraska summers are warm and winters are cold, so the growing season from late spring to early autumn is the sensible window for a round. The Sandhills are open, exposed ground, and the wind that shapes the dunes will also shape your round.
