About Cape Breton Highlands Links
Cape Breton Highlands Links is an 18-hole, par 72 course at Ingonish Beach, inside Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. Stanley Thompson designed it, and the back tees play 6,592 yards. Thompson called it his mountains-and-ocean course, with mountain views and ocean vistas. The layout reads as links-style golf at the start and finish with a mountain stretch through the middle. Many regard it as Thompson's finest work.
- The holes carry Scottish names that celebrate the area's Celtic heritage.
- Ian Andrew's restoration returned the bunkers to their original shapes and locations, and tree clearing reopened views of the ocean.
- Stanley's Sunset Grill in the pro shop and the adjacent Keltic Resort are beside the course.
- The white tees measure 6,161 yards, a shorter option from the back tees.
History of Cape Breton Highlands Links
Highlands Links began as a Depression-era make-work project tied to the creation of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The plan was originally for nine holes and was expanded to eighteen. Work started in 1939 and took two years, with much of the equipment arriving by boat and local labor wielding picks, shovels, axes and saws. The course opened in 1941. Vegetation growth and later alterations blurred Thompson's intent, and a major restoration under architect Ian Andrew worked to bring back the original bunkering and corridors.
