About Cape Arundel Golf Club
Cape Arundel Golf Club is an 18-hole course on River Road in Kennebunkport, Maine, laid out beside the tidal Kennebunk River. Walter Travis designed the course as it plays today, and his greens are its defining feature: small, tightly contoured and demanding about where an approach shot finishes. The river is not just scenery. Its tidal creeks and water hazards come into play across the round, and bunkers guard many of the greens as well. Walking is permitted, and the compact property makes that an easy choice.
- Phil Mickelson set the course record, a 60, in 2006.
- Only one hole on the scorecard is a par 5, an unusual balance for a full 18-hole layout.
- The whole routing fits on about 88 acres beside the river.
- The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
History of Cape Arundel Golf Club
Alexander Findlay laid out the original nine holes in 1900, the same year the clubhouse was built. In the early 1920s Walter Travis expanded the course to 18 holes and redesigned it. The clubhouse stands above the river, with views across the water.
