About Woking Golf Club
Woking Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 70 heathland course at Hook Heath in Surrey, and the oldest of the county's heathland layouts. Heather carries, fast-running fairways and undulating greens set its character, with many of the putting surfaces multi-tiered. The course has an outsized place in architectural history for alterations made in the early 1900s.
- Architects including Tom Simpson and Tim Lobb have worked on the course since Tom Dunn's original layout.
- The course has influenced the thinking of many later designers.
- Walking is allowed and trolleys are permitted.
- A putting green and a pitching and chipping area are available for warming up.
History of Woking Golf Club
The club dates to 1893, when Tom Dunn laid out the original course on Hook Heath. The change came in the first years of the 1900s, when John Low and Stuart Paton, both members, began reworking hazards with a different idea in mind: that a bunker should tempt the golfer rather than simply punish a mistake. Tom Simpson later added to that work, and Tim Lobb has also worked on the course.
Signature holes at Woking Golf Club
On the 4th, a par 4, John Low and Stuart Paton dug centerline bunkers in 1901, inspired by the Principal's Nose bunker at St Andrews. The hole is regarded as the birthplace of strategic golf design.
