About Southern Pines Golf Club
Southern Pines Golf Club is an 18-hole Donald Ross course at Southern Pines, North Carolina. It opened in 1906 and is one of Ross's earliest original designs. The course is open to members, their guests and the public. It has been restored by architect Kyle Franz and is now run by the same group that operates the Pine Needles and Mid Pines resorts.
- Kyle Franz removed more than 700 trees, raising the canopy so that more of the course can be seen across the property.
- The restoration added a bonus par 3 inspired by a hole Ross designed but that was later lost.
- Guests of the club also get access to the sister properties at Pine Needles and Mid Pines.
- Franz had earlier restored Mid Pines in 2013 and Pine Needles in 2018.
History of Southern Pines Golf Club
Southern Pines opened for play in 1906. The local Elks club owned it until 2020, when the operators of Pine Needles and Mid Pines took over management and began a restoration with Kyle Franz. The work lasted about 18 months and rebuilt the bunkers and greens. The course reopened in September 2021, and an 18-hole putting course followed in 2023.
When to play Southern Pines Golf Club
Autumn is a favored season for golf in the Sandhills, and the club lists September and October among its busiest periods, so book ahead for those weeks. Check availability when you reserve, since peak dates fill early.
Playing Southern Pines Golf Club: tips
