About Quail Hollow Club

Quail Hollow Club is a private 18-hole course in Charlotte, North Carolina. George Cobb designed it, and it opened in 1961. Tom Fazio later redesigned the course, and the layout in use today is a long, demanding test built to handle the professional game. The club has become one of the most dependable tournament venues in American golf, and the course is best known for a three-hole finish that has shaped many of the big moments played here.

  • Justin Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
  • Scottie Scheffler won the 2025 PGA Championship here by five shots, his third major title.
  • The United States beat the International team by 17½ points to 12½ in the 2022 Presidents Cup.
  • The Kemper Open was played here every year from 1969 to 1979.

History of Quail Hollow Club

Quail Hollow's course opened in 1961 to a design by George Cobb. Professional golf came in 1969 with the Kemper Open, and a PGA Tour event, now the Truist Championship, launched here in 2003. Arnold Palmer altered several holes in the 1980s, and Tom Fazio took over the redesign work after that, modernizing the course in stages and reworking it again ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship. A second PGA Championship in 2025 and the 2022 Presidents Cup followed. Throughout, the club has remained private.

Signature holes at Quail Hollow Club

The finish is the draw. The 17th is a 223-yard par 3 with a pond running alongside the hole and the green pushed out toward the water. The 18th is a 494-yard par 4 with a creek down the entire left side of a narrow fairway and a bunker on the right, and it is regularly rated among the toughest closing holes in the sport.

When to play Quail Hollow Club

Quail Hollow is private, so your date is set by whoever invites you. If you want to see the course at its most dramatic, the club hosted the PGA Championship in mid-May 2025, which is when tournament crowds fill the closing holes.
