About Olympia Fields Country Club — North Course

Olympia Fields Country Club's North Course is a Willie Park Jr. design in Olympia Fields, Illinois, in the Chicago area. Park was a two-time Open champion. It is a tree-lined parkland course on a varied piece of Midwestern ground, with Butterfield Creek winding through several holes. Deep fairway bunkers pinch the driving areas, most greens slope hard from back to front, and nearly all of Park's original design and strategy is still intact despite the lengthening that top-level golf has required.

  • Johnny Farrell beat amateur Bobby Jones in a 36-hole playoff at the 1928 U.S. Open held here.
  • Jim Furyk won the 2003 U.S. Open here at 8 under par, three strokes clear of Stephen Leaney.
  • The club also hosted the PGA Championship in 1925 and 1961, the U.S. Senior Open in 1997 and the 2015 U.S. Amateur.
  • Jon Rahm won the 2020 BMW Championship on the North Course, and the event returned to the club in 2023.

History of Olympia Fields Country Club — North Course

Olympia Fields was founded in 1915 and grew into the first private club in the country with 72 holes, laid out across hundreds of acres. Willie Park Jr. designed the fourth of those courses, now known as the North, and two of the original four have since gone, leaving the North and the South. The clubhouse was completed in 1925. Mark Mungeam later redid the bunkers on the North, and the course has been stretched over the years without losing the shape of Park's holes.

The round opens with a par 5, one of the longest holes on the course. The 14th is the one most often singled out: a par 4 of about 450 yards with Butterfield Creek crossing the fairway through a tree-lined corridor.
