About Butler National Golf Club
Butler National Golf Club is a par 71, 18-hole course at Oak Brook, a suburb west of Chicago. George Fazio designed it, and his nephew Tom Fazio supervised construction. The ground is relatively flat, with tree-lined fairways and water hazards in play, and the club has a reputation as one of the hardest courses in the country. It was built as a championship venue from the start.
- Golf Digest placed Butler National 21st in its list of America's 100 Greatest Courses in May 2007.
- The greens were converted to A-1 bentgrass in 2004 and are known for being hard to read.
- Tom Watson won the Western Open here three times, in 1974, 1977 and 1984.
- Walking is encouraged and caddies are available, though carts are also permitted.
History of Butler National Golf Club
Paul Butler, the developer who founded the village of Oak Brook, created the club on the former York Country Club property in the early 1970s. It became the home of the PGA Tour's Western Open from 1974 to 1990, a run of 17 straight years. The event ended there because the Tour adopted a policy of holding tournaments only at clubs that admitted women and minorities as members, and Butler National did not. The Western Open moved to Cog Hill in Lemont in 1991.
Signature holes at Butler National Golf Club
The par-3 5th is played across a lake to a green on a peninsula. The 7th is a par 5 of roughly 600 yards or more that bends around a creek and trees. The 12th was converted from a par 5 into a demanding par 4 with a small green. The 18th closes the round as a long par 4.
