About Northland Country Club
Northland Country Club is an 18-hole, par 71 course in Duluth, Minnesota, measuring 6,825 yards from the longest tees. Donald Ross's design work here dates to 1927. The setting is wooded, high above the shore, with views of Lake Superior from an elevated position. The greens are famously challenging, and they are widely regarded as among the most complex in Minnesota.
- The 1956 U.S. Women's Open was played here and won by Kathy Cornelius.
- Ann Gregory competed in that Open, becoming the first Black woman to play in a U.S. Women's Open.
- The club has hosted the Minnesota State Amateur more than once.
- Northland is ranked among the top five courses in Minnesota and appeared on a 2013 list of the top 100 classic courses in the United States.
History of Northland Country Club
Northland was established in 1899 as a nine-hole course whose fairways wound around Superior Street, with some shots played across the road. The course was later expanded to 18 holes, and Donald Ross's course was completed in 1927. Fire damaged the clubhouse in 1918 and again in 1973, and a new clubhouse replaced it in the mid-2000s.
When to play Northland Country Club
Northland keeps a northern golf season. The course is open from spring to fall and closes over the winter, so a visit has to fit into those months.
