About The Links Course at Lawsonia

The Links Course at Lawsonia is a public 18-hole, par 72 course at Green Lake, Wisconsin, laid out by William Langford and Theodore Moreau on land that had been part of Victor Lawson's estate. It has the wide-open, Scottish look that gave the design its name. The routing is bold rather than long, and it asks for creative shotmaking more than distance. Elevated greens and deep bunkers cut into the fairways are the main defenses.

  • Builders shaped the ground with 1920s steam shovels, one reason the contours look so large and bold today.
  • The par sequence from the 9th to the 14th alternates 5-3-5-3-5-3, an unusual run for a course of this kind.
  • Trees have been removed in large numbers to bring back the open character of the original design.
  • The 6th is a par 4 of roughly 440 yards and is a favorite among players who know the course.

History of The Links Course at Lawsonia

The course opened in 1930. Ron Forse led a restoration of the course in 2014, returning it closer to the spirit of the original routing.

Signature holes at The Links Course at Lawsonia

The 7th is the hole people talk about. It is a short par 3 to a steeply elevated green, so judging the club matters more than hitting it hard.

When to play The Links Course at Lawsonia

Green Lake is in central Wisconsin, where winters are cold and snowy, so the golf season runs from late spring through early autumn. Summer and September usually bring the most comfortable playing conditions.
