About Shangri-La's Hambantota Golf Resort
Shangri-La's Hambantota Golf Resort is an 18-hole course on Sri Lanka's southern coast, designed by Rodney Wright. It plays through three zones: the Coconut Plantation, the Dune Area and the Sapphire Mine. Caddies, golf carts, club and shoe rental and a pro shop are all available.
- The Coconut Plantation zone holds lush fairways and bunkers.
- The Dune Area has subtle elevation changes and looks out to the Indian Ocean.
- The Sapphire Mine section has large greens and plenty of water.
- Paspalum grass, chosen for tolerance of salt, covers the course in a tropical climate.
History of Shangri-La's Hambantota Golf Resort
The course was built as part of the Shangri-La resort at Hambantota and opened in 2016. Its site was a former sapphire mine, and the work restored plant cover and brought birdlife back.
