About Ganton Golf Club

Ganton Golf Club lies in North Yorkshire, nine miles from the coast, on open heathland over a base of sand. Gorse and broom line the holes, and trees mostly stay at the edges of the property. The course is links-like. More than 100 bunkers defend the layout, and they have steep, revetted faces. Ganton plays on firm, fast turf on an exposed site.

  • Ganton has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Curtis Cup in 2000 and the Walker Cup in 2003.
  • The Amateur Championship is played here regularly.
  • Harry Vardon was the first professional at the club, appointed weeks before his first Open win.
  • Short par 4s give players a chance to attack, and the 14th is driveable.

History of Ganton Golf Club

Ganton opened in 1891, and Tom Chisholm laid out the original course. Vardon, James Braid, Harry Colt and Alister MacKenzie are all credited with changes, though the layout never had a major redesign. In September 1949 the club hosted the Ryder Cup, and the United States won 7-5.
