About Aronimink Golf Club
Aronimink Golf Club is a par 70 course in Newtown Square, in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, laid out by Donald Ross. Ross did not rely on single hazards. He grouped bunkers into clusters, so a drive or an approach usually means choosing which side of a group to attack, and that clustering is the best-known trait of the design. The course opened in 1928. Since then it has hosted men's and women's major championships as well as several PGA Tour events.
- Gil Hanse's restoration added more than 100 bunkers, arranged in clusters modelled on Ross's original pattern.
- The same project widened fairways, enlarged greens and built 18 new tee boxes, guided by aerial photographs from the late 1920s.
- Gary Player won the 1962 PGA Championship at Aronimink, the first major contested on the course.
- Ross later remarked that he had meant Aronimink to be his masterpiece, and that he built better than he knew.
History of Aronimink Golf Club
Aronimink was founded in 1896. In 1926 the club acquired around 300 acres in Newtown Square and commissioned Donald Ross, and the new clubhouse opened on Memorial Day 1928. The 1962 PGA Championship was followed by the 1977 U.S. Amateur and the 2003 Senior PGA Championship. Two PGA Tour stops came after that, with the AT&T National in 2010 and 2011, and in 2020 the course staged the Women's PGA Championship.
Signature holes at Aronimink Golf Club
The 1st is the hole most often singled out. It plunges into a valley and then climbs back up to an elevated green, so the round begins with an uphill approach that sets the demands of the day.
When to play Aronimink Golf Club
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable months for golf around Philadelphia, and they are when the course has staged its biggest men's events. Summers are warm and humid, and winter conditions limit play, so timing matters less than getting an invitation in the first place.
