About Silloth on Solway Golf Club
Silloth on Solway Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 links on the Cumbrian coast, looking across the Solway Firth. Fairways roll hard between sand dunes, heather and gorse line many of them, and several shots are played blind, which keeps the course feeling like old-fashioned links golf. The turf is firm and springy, and the emphasis is on ground play and judging the wind rather than on length. It is ranked among the top 100 courses in Great Britain and Ireland, and the clubhouse has a dining room and a pro shop for visitors.
- Ten Open champions visited Silloth in the club's first thirty years.
- The 4th tee gives uninterrupted views across the Solway Firth before a drive over the dunes.
- Cecilia Leitch, the dominant women's golfer of her era, came from the club and won 12 national championships.
- The pro shop and practice facilities are on site, and trolleys, buggies and rental clubs are available.
History of Silloth on Solway Golf Club
The North British Railway Company founded the club in 1892. It brought in Willie Fernie and Willie Park for advice on laying out the new links. The Leitch family produced the club's best-known player, Cecilia Leitch.
Signature holes at Silloth on Solway Golf Club
The 4th is a short par 4 whose green has steep drops on either side. The 9th, known as The Manx, is a par 3 played to a small green. Several shots on the course are played blind, so a first visit is as much about learning the ground as hitting it.
When to play Silloth on Solway Golf Club
Wind is the course's main defense, so a calm day plays very differently from a blustery one. The firm, springy turf puts the emphasis on ground play in any season. Check the forecast for wind direction before you book, and allow time to see how the holes change when it turns, since the same shot can need a different club in the afternoon.
