About Trump Turnberry — Ailsa Course Golf Course

Turnberry's Ailsa Course is one of the most visually spectacular links courses in the British Isles, routing along a headland above the Firth of Clyde with Ailsa Craig — a volcanic dome rising 340 metres from the sea — as a constant companion on the horizon. The course occupies the site of two World War airfields that effectively destroyed the original links, and the restoration by Mackenzie Ross after the Second World War is one of golf's great engineering achievements: from almost nothing, Ross created an 18-hole layout of championship quality that within a few years was hosting the Open Championship. Tom Watson's 'Duel in the Sun' against Jack Nicklaus in the 1977 Open Championship is widely considered the greatest 72-hole duel in major championship history, with Watson making two consecutive birdies on the 71st and 72nd to edge Nicklaus by a single stroke. Greg Norman won the 1986 Open here, and a fourth Open — Thomas Bjorn's near-miss and Mark Calcavecchia's 1989 win — added to the venue's championship lore. The resort is now operated by Trump Hotels, with a significant renovation by Martin Ebert completed in 2016.

History of Trump Turnberry — Ailsa Course

Turnberry's original links were developed in 1901 but were requisitioned and converted to military airfields during both World Wars, leaving the land in a severely damaged state after 1945. Mackenzie Ross carried out a remarkable restoration between 1946 and 1951, transforming what was effectively rubble and tarmac into an 18-hole championship links that hosted the Open Championship within a decade of reopening. Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus played the greatest sustained head-to-head duel in major championship history here in 1977, shooting 65–65 and 65–66 over the final two rounds — Watson winning by one stroke in what is universally known as the Duel in the Sun. In 2016, Martin Ebert carried out a further renovation for Trump Hotels, who had purchased the resort in 2014.

Signature Holes at Trump Turnberry — Ailsa Course

The par-3 9th, Bruce's Castle, is Turnberry's most celebrated hole — a clifftop tee shot with the Ailsa Craig volcanic island perfectly framed in the background across the Firth of Clyde, and Turnberry Lighthouse on the headland to the right. The wind across the Firth can add or subtract multiple clubs from one day to the next. The par-4 10th plays from a tee beside the lighthouse, making the tee position itself one of the most spectacular in the game. Together, holes 7 through 11 form one of golf's great sequences of seaside holes.

Best Time to Visit Trump Turnberry — Ailsa Course

May through September is the recommended season on the Ayrshire coast. The west-facing aspect means late evening light in June and July is exceptional — a golden Ayrshire sunset with Ailsa Craig silhouetted against the sky is a defining memory for many visitors. The resort is at its busiest in summer; spring and autumn offer better availability and often firmer, faster playing conditions.
