About Shelter Harbor Golf Club

Shelter Harbor Golf Club is a par 71 course in Charlestown, Rhode Island, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. It is laid out among wetlands, mature trees and rock walls, with glacial boulders on the site, and it covers about 400 acres near the southern shore. Fairways are generous, so the test comes mainly from demanding approach shots and challenging greens rather than from narrow driving corridors.

  • A permanent prohibition on development protects the club's roughly 400 acres of open space.
  • Reviewers praise the bentgrass greens, comparing them to velvet and a pool table.
  • The clubhouse looks out over the course and the countryside toward the waters of Block Island Sound.
  • The club is a member-owned equity club, a structure in which the members own the property.

History of Shelter Harbor Golf Club

Shelter Harbor opened in July 2005. It was the first new private course built in Washington County, Rhode Island, in more than 100 years.
