About Royal Malta Golf Club
Royal Malta Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course at Marsa, and it is the only golf course in Malta. It sits on flat ground inside the Marsa Sports Club grounds, with trees along the fairways and relatively small greens that are well protected. Writers describe it as deceptively simple, since accuracy off the tee counts for more than distance. The club dates to 1888, and it welcomes visitors who book ahead through its website.
- The par-3 6th plays over a stone ruin known as the Maid's Bedroom, which predates the course.
- Buggies and rental clubs can be hired, and a driving range and restaurant are on site.
- Rebuilding after the 1988 flood brought Bermuda grass and a modern irrigation system.
- Greens were once made of concrete covered with sand when the course lay around Valletta's bastions.
History of Royal Malta Golf Club
Torrens founded the club in 1888, within weeks of arriving in Malta. The first course had nine holes laid out around the bastions of Valletta. The Duke of Edinburgh was a founding member and the club received royal status. In 1904 the club moved to its present site at Marsa, on flat land that was once part of an old harbor and estuary. Flooding in 1988 destroyed most of the course, and rebuilding began in 1989.
