About Royal Golf Club de Belgique
Royal Golf Club de Belgique at Tervuren is a private parkland club led by its Arboretum course, an 18-hole layout that was long known as the Old Course. The fairways run through mature woodland with a variety of trees, planted on what was once King Leopold II's Ravenstein estate. Three architects shaped the course: Seymour Dunn, Tom Simpson and Martin Hawtree. A nine-hole Parc course sits alongside it. The Arboretum is on the short side and rewards accuracy more than power, with gently sloping ground that suits a walking round.
- Leopold II named the estate the Royal Club of Belgium.
- Leopold II requested arboretum-style conifers on the estate, which explains the variety of trees.
- Visitors play by prior arrangement.
- The club has a driving range, practice areas, a pro shop, a restaurant and a bar.
History of Royal Golf Club de Belgique
The Royal Golf Club de Belgique dates to 1906 at Tervuren, on the Ravenstein estate owned by Leopold II. Seymour Dunn designed the original holes and also designed the Ostend course. The two were a pair, one on the coast and one inland, and the Ostend branch became a separate club, Royal Ostend, in 1948. At Tervuren, Tom Simpson revised the course in 1928, and Martin Hawtree updated it in 1990.
Signature holes at Royal Golf Club de Belgique
The 17th is a long par 4 that bends to the right. Elsewhere the course asks for accuracy rather than power.
