About Pronghorn Club — Nicklaus Course

The Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn is an 18-hole, par 72 layout near Bend in Central Oregon's high desert, roughly 3,200 feet above sea level. Jack Nicklaus designed it, and its routing flows among outcrops of ancient lava rock, waste areas and stands of juniper, with the Cascade Mountains in the distance. Strategic fairway bunkering rewards committing to a line, while multi-tiered, contoured greens put the premium on approach shots. Sage comes into play along with the juniper and lava, and a few holes bring in water.

  • It is the only course in Oregon designed by Jack Nicklaus.
  • Golf Digest counts it among America's 100 greatest public courses.
  • Five sets of tees run down to 5,256 yards, so the course suits a wide range of handicaps.
  • A driving range, putting green, pitching area and golf academy are all on site for warming up.

History of Pronghorn Club — Nicklaus Course

The Nicklaus Course opened in 2004 as part of the Pronghorn resort. In 2022 the resort was rebranded as Juniper Preserve, so the course appears under both names in older guides and tee-sheet listings.

Signature holes at Pronghorn Club — Nicklaus Course

The back nine is where the lava takes over, with holes 12 through 17 routed around volcanic outcrops and junipers. The 12th is a short par 4 that asks for careful positioning, and the 13th is a par 4 played around a lake with a waterfall. The par-5 15th draws more attention than any other hole.

When to play Pronghorn Club — Nicklaus Course

The course is open year-round but closes when snow falls, and Bend sees snow through the winter. Late spring through early fall is the dependable window for comfortable golf, and the course plays firm and fast.
