About Pennard Golf Club
Pennard Golf Club is a par 71 links on the Gower Peninsula, set on a clifftop around 200 feet above the sea near Swansea. That height earned it the nickname the Links in the Sky. The land is a mix of dunes, humps and hollows with few flat lies, and gorse and wind add to the challenge. From the course you look out over Three Cliffs Bay and across to Oxwich Bay.
- Tom Doak counts Pennard among his all-time favorite courses.
- Max Faulkner, a former Open champion, rated Pennard the best course in Britain.
- The fairways are rumpled and the turf plays firm and fast.
- Societies are welcome, and group deals are available for larger parties.
History of Pennard Golf Club
Golf has been played at Pennard since 1896, and the club was reconstituted in 1908, the year James Braid was brought in to design the course. Braid returned in later years, and Harry Colt contributed suggestions. C.K. Cotton made changes in 1965 and Donald Steel in 1991.
Signature holes at Pennard Golf Club
The 7th, known as Castle, plays between the ruins of a 12th-century castle and a medieval church. The 14th is reported to have been Braid's favorite hole at the club. The 16th, called Great Tor, and the 17th are back-to-back par 5s, and both open onto views of Three Cliffs, the beach and the sea.
Playing Pennard Golf Club: tips
Visitors are welcome and can book tee times with the club. Wind is the course's main defense, so plan for it when choosing a club. Cattle and ponies graze the links, so take care around them and leave the fenced-off greens clear.
