Best Golf Courses in Wales

5 ranked courses in Wales

Wales has five courses in this guide, and all five are links. Royal Porthcawl in Porthcawl ranks highest: Charles Gibson's 1891 course, later worked on by Ramsay Hunter, Harry Colt, Tom Simpson and Martin Ebert, which has hosted the Walker Cup and the AIG Women's Open. It is semi-private; visitor availability is best on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday afternoons, with a maximum handicap of 20 for men and 30 for women. Royal St David's in Harlech, from 1894, is private, with advance booking and handicap certificates required. Aberdovey, the second semi-private course, was founded in 1892 and shaped by Herbert Fowler, Harry Colt and James Braid, and visitors reserve through the club's online tee sheet. The other two are private but open to visitors. Conwy, formed as a club in 1890, has holes by Jack Morris, Frank Pennink, Brian Huggett and Neil Coles, and welcomes visitors and societies. Golf has been played at Pennard in Swansea since 1896, and James Braid designed the course in 1908, with later changes by C.K. Cotton and Donald Steel; visitors can book tee times. No course here is public or a resort course.

About Golf Courses in Wales

Porthcawl and Swansea (Pennard) pair as a south Wales trip, and Aberdovey and Harlech (Royal St David's) pair on the west coast. Conwy sits on its own, so a full Welsh tour is three separate stops.
