About Forest Dunes Golf Club (Weiskopf course)
Forest Dunes Golf Club's Weiskopf course is a par 72 public layout at Roscommon, in north-central Michigan, designed by Tom Weiskopf and opened in 2002. It plays as two different courses. The front nine runs through tall pines of the Huron National Forest in a traditional parkland style, with tree-lined corridors and some changes in elevation. The back nine leaves the trees for exposed glacial sand, where large waste areas and native grasses frame and cross the fairways.
- A 117-yard par-3 19th hole follows the 18th, built to settle tied matches, with a bunker in the middle of its green.
- Weiskopf has ranked Forest Dunes among the top three courses he designed in the United States.
- The practice area includes a double-ended driving range, a short-game area, a putting green and a practice bunker.
- No houses line the fairways, which keeps the round inside the forest setting.
History of Forest Dunes Golf Club (Weiskopf course)
Weiskopf's design was built around the turn of the millennium, but financial trouble hit the project before it opened. A Detroit carpenters' pension fund took over the property and the course reopened for play in 2002. The resort has since grown beyond the original 18, adding Tom Doak's reversible Loop and a ten-hole short course.
Signature holes at Forest Dunes Golf Club (Weiskopf course)
The 16th, known as Hell's Acre, is a long par 3 on the dunes nine. The 17th is a short par 4 and a genuine birdie chance late in the round, while the 18th is a par 5 that makes a risk-and-reward finish. After the 18th comes the bonus 19th, a short par 3 that plays over water.
When to play Forest Dunes Golf Club (Weiskopf course)
