About Ekwanok Country Club
Ekwanok Country Club is an 18-hole, par 70 course in Manchester, Vermont, designed by Walter Travis with John Duncan Dunn. It sits near the Green Mountains, in the part of the state where Travis worked with gently rolling farmland. Founded in 1899, it ranks as one of the oldest golf clubs in the country and has been named the best course in Vermont for years.
- The Ekwanok Scholarship Trust, set up in 1964, funds post-secondary study for caddies and other seasonal staff.
- Restoration work has removed trees, rebuilt fairway bunkers and encouraged native grasses, moving the course back toward its original look.
- Golf Digest and other national magazines have repeatedly named Ekwanok the best course in Vermont.
- Geoffrey Cornish later moved several green sites, so the greens do not all follow Travis's original plan.
History of Ekwanok Country Club
Ekwanok was founded in 1899. Its biggest moment came in 1914, when the course hosted the U.S. Amateur Championship, and after that event the club stepped back from hosting national competitions. More recently Bruce Hepner of Renaissance Golf Design has led a restoration of the bunkers and surrounds, working to recover features that had been lost or changed over the decades.
Signature holes at Ekwanok Country Club
The 7th is the hole that made Ekwanok famous: a 595-yard par 5 where a hill bisects the fairway from about 300 to 370 yards out, so it plays as a true three-shot hole. The 13th is a par 3 of roughly 220 yards. The 14th is a short par 4 of about 340 yards.
When to play Ekwanok Country Club
Vermont's golf season is short. Summer and early autumn are the best months for a round here, and winters are snowbound, so the course is not playable for much of the year.
