About Cruden Bay Golf Club

Cruden Bay Golf Club sits on the North Sea coast of Aberdeenshire, in the village of Cruden Bay north of Aberdeen. The Championship Course is a par 70 links that runs through tall dunes, with secluded holes and views out over the sea. The routing meanders, shaped by the natural linksland. The club also has the nine-hole St Olaf Course.

  • Two driveable par 4s are part of the layout.
  • Back-to-back par 3s are part of the layout.
  • Blind drives and blind approaches are part of the test.
  • Tees are elevated, and holes play along ridges and in bowls.

History of Cruden Bay Golf Club

Golf has been played on the links at Cruden Bay since about 1791, and the modern course grew up alongside the arrival of the railway in the 1890s. It opened in 1899. In the 1920s Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler reworked it, keeping about ten greens, and the design has changed little since. Tom Mackenzie made tee adjustments in 2014.

Signature holes at Cruden Bay Golf Club

The 4th is a par 3 played across a chasm with water on the left and dunes on the right, where wind decides the club. The 14th asks for a blind approach to a sunken green. Reviewers single out the run from the 4th onward as the most dramatic stretch of the round, with bumpy fairways and water.

When to play Cruden Bay Golf Club

The club takes visitors through the year, with lower rates in winter. Wind is part of the test at Cruden Bay, especially on the exposed par-3 4th. Check conditions before you travel.
